Switch controlled series resistor

You can parallel a resistor with a switch. That gives you 2 resistances that the circuit fragment may have. Either the resistor’s value of resistance while the switch is open, or no resistance at all while the switch is closed. Since there will be times that there’s no resistance at all at that part of the circuit, then you will always need another way to limit current to the entire circuit. One way is by having some other resistance in series with the resistor that has a switch in parallel with it.
