Important Windows alt codes for typing symbols on computer keyboard

  • Make sure NUM LOCK key is activated. There should be a light on the key or elsewhere that is lit up.
  • Press and hold one of the ALT keys.
  • On the number pad (numbers keys on the right side of the keyboard, not the ones on top of the keyboard), press each of the numbers of the code that produces the symbol you want.
  • Release the ALT key.

Your symbol should show up where you had placed the cursor.

Basic Math:

Hold down the “alt” key while entering the numbers that follow. Then release the “alt” key to get the symbol to display.

  • ≈ = alt247 – Approximately equal to.
  • ± = alt241 – Plus-minus symbol. The value of the number given next to it can be both that much above and below zero.
  • > = alt0062 – Greater than symbol. Left side’s value is “greater than” right side’s value.
  • » = alt175 – Much greater than symbol.
  • ≥ = alt242 – Greater than, or equal to, symbol.
  • < = alt0060 – Less than symbol. Left side’s value is “less than” right side’s value.
  • ≤ = alt243 – Less than or equal to symbol.
  • « = alt 174 – Much less than symbol.

Electronics:

Hold down the “alt” key while entering the numbers that follow. Then release the “alt” key to get the symbol to display.

  • Ω = alt234 – Omega (Greek letter) symbol. Unit of resistance.
  • ± = alt241 – Plus-minus symbol. The value of the number given next to it can be both that much above and below zero. Split/Dual power supplies have both a positive, and negative voltage in relationship to 0V ground.
  • ß = alt225 – Beta (Greek letter) symbol.
  • µ = alt230 – Mu (Lowercase Greek letter). Micro, or 1 millionth. 47µF (microFarad) equals 0.000047F (Farad). Some people just use the letter u for micro instead.
  • τ = alt231 = Tau (Greek letter). Symbol for resistor/capacitor (RC) “Time Constant”. TC for “time constant” might be used instead.
