Brief delayed Voltage Single Supply Op Amp Follower LM358 and Capacitor

Delayed voltage follower using an op amp will result in the output of the same voltage as is at the non inverting (+) input for as long as the (+) input voltage is steady. However, when the (+) voltage changes, it takes some time for the output to change from the old voltage to the new voltage.

  • Capacitor at the non inverting input has to charge through the 10k trimpot and the 1K resistor in order for it’s voltage to rise. It also has to discharge through the 2 resistances for it’s voltage to go down. The resistance and voltages involved determine how quickly the capacitor’s voltage changes.
  •  No current flows in or out of the non inverting (+) input (other than a tiny bit of leakage, usually too small to take in to consideration). The input just monitors the voltage of the capacitor.
  • The capacitor will eventually match the trimpot voltage and stay there.
  • The output voltage wants to be more like the (+) input voltage than the non inverting (-) input voltage. So ,when you tie the output (make a direct connection) to the (-) input, the output voltage goes up or down until it is the same as the (+) input voltage.
  • Negative feedback is when you send some or all, such as in this case, of the output voltage to the (-) input. Doing so has a stabilizing effect on the output voltage. Circuits with positive feed back on the other hand, have voltages that change dramatically.
