Possibly the best tool for testing circuits and learning electronics is the Breadboard. Most through hole components can be plugged into the board and removed as desired.
Usually there is 2 columns separated by a gap, each of which containing many rows of 5 holes that are electrically connected.
On the both sides of the board that size, there is usually 2 long rows of holes called rails that are usually indicated by red and blue lines. All the holes next to the red line are electrically connected, while all the holes next to the blue line are electrically connected. Red is usually connected to the positive supply while blue is connected to the negative supply.
