Trimpots (trimmer potentiometers) are resistors with 3 terminals.
2 of the terminals are the ends of a resistive element.
The third terminal is a wiper, that slides up and down the resistive element.
Therefore, you can vary the resistance to from just one end terminal, to the wiper, making a variable resistance.
Or, you can put a voltage across both far ends of the resistive element. Which gives a divided voltage at the wiper terminal. Giving you an adjustable voltage divider.
