Transistors

Transistors are three terminal components. The basic property being that one terminal determines how well the other 2 terminals conduct.

  • Bipolar Junction Transistors (BJTs):
    1. NPN: Two N type semiconductor material areas with a P type semiconductor material sandwiched between them.
    2. PNP: Two P type semiconductor material areas with an N type semiconductor material sandwiched between them.
    3. Three terminals are…
      • Collector:
      • Base: (the middle material)
      • Emitter:
  • Bipolar junction transistors need a small amount of current through the base (and emitter), in order for the transistor to allow many times as much current to flow through the collector and emitter. No base current = no collector (and emitter) current.
    1. NPN – Base and Collector are more positive than, or sometimes equal to, emitter.
    2. PNP – Base and Collector are more more negative than, or sometimes equal to, emitter.

Field Effect Transistors (FETs):

Field Effect Transistors (FETs):

    • MOSFETS.
    • JFETs.
    • Both types come 2 modes:
      • Enhancement.
      • Depletion.
    • The three terminals are…
      • Drain.
      • Gate.
      • Source.
