4049 CMOS hex inverting buffer integrated circuit HCF4049UBE
The 4049 is a 16 pin integrated circuit that has 6 NOT gate circuits in it. Since it has 6 logic NOT gates in it, it is called a hex inverter. There is 2 pins of the integrated circuit devoted to each NOT gate and 2 pins that power the integrated circuit and outputs. Each NOT gate output is either high (commonly 5V), or low (commonly 0V), depending on the state of the input. If the signal to the input is low, then the output if high. If the signal to the input is high, then the output will be low.
